Finding the right therapist for you is one of the most underrated parts of the process
when beginning counseling.
Therapy requires a relationship between you and your therapist, a connection that is
paramount to the efficacy of treatment. You will have delicate moments, vulnerable
moments that must be handled with grace. There needs to be trust, safety, and an
unconditional positive regard from your therapist.
The great thing is that therapists are not one-size-fits-all, and there is a wide variety to
choose from. Take your time, and make sure you are comfortable with your choice.
The first thing to do is identify what is most important to you, the values you wish to
share with your therapist. This could include religious beliefs, lifestyle attitudes, or
whatever has importance in your life.
From there, you should have a consultation with a therapist. Most counseling practices
offer consultations free of charge, and it is a great opportunity to get to know the
therapist and to catch a glimpse of what therapy might look like. This is a time to ask all
the questions that bounce around and to get more comfortable with the components of
therapy that elicit anxiety.
If you’re not comfortable with a therapist, that’s OK. Try someone else. I promise, we do
not take it personally. There is no harm in shopping around for the right fit, and you
should find someone who holds space for you in the way you need it as an individual.
And if you’re not sure where to go next, we can refer you to a colleague who might be
better at meeting your needs.
